"I felt a bright, high-pitched chime of love for my aunt, for letting me hurt just a little longer."

lithereal, book review,

I've been in a reading slump. I think you can tell due to the lack of posts. And by seeing my Goodreads goal tracker - which is pathetic, to be honest. I've had so much free time, I should have been spending it constructively. Alas... I have been reading. I have. It was just well - fanfiction. Not really something I can check off on GR, huh? Due to all these crazy times I simply craved something familiar - characters I knew, all aspects of the story clearly tagged, a guaranteed happy ending. Something comforting.

I have also been out of work for 7 months now, and not likely to start working soon - again, due to the pandemic. It's just been a miserable few months and somehow, books have not provided comfort. I'm hoping that will change as the weather warms up - maybe getting out of the house a bit will clear my head and get me into the reading groove again. (The weather has been miserable, as well, to top it all off.)

Still, I did give some books a try. Among them was this one - the sequel to 'Wicked Like a Wildfire' which I read last year and review on this blog previously. I really liked the original, the fact that it was set in my home country, all the vivid description, the use of our language and superstition. All geared up to see what was next for sisters Iris and Malina I thought this would be the perfect book to get me out of my funk. I thought wrong.

Unfortunately, I DNF-ed this one. It was unreadable - so boring and it dragged. Oh, god, how it dragged. I gave up fairly soon but it was enough for me to see it just isn't for me. The characters didn't behave the way they did in the previous book and there were none of the descriptions of beautiful landscapes. It was disappointing, but what can I do. On to bigger and better things, right?
