Iris is back in Oath following Dacre's attack on the town she was staying in, looking for Roman. He is revealed to have been taken by Dacre and has had his memories erased. The gas he inhaled at the battlefield damaged his lungs, and Dacre keeps him by his side by erasing the pain as well as all other things that make him Roman.
When Roman's articles defending Dacre start appearing in the Gazette, Iris knows something is amiss. This is confirmed when the power of the magic typewriters brings them back to each other. Roman's memories start coming back, but so do his injuries and hs leg and lungs are protesting as he struggled to hide what's happening from Dacre. He shares information with Iris that helps in the war effort and risks his life. Because of his father's involvement with Dacre's forces, Roman is able to reunite with Iris and spend another life with her - after they've only been together once in the dark, on their wedding night, the eve of the war coming to their door.
Dacre's tactics are wicked and his reach wide - when he makes a speech in Oath all hell breaks loose. He is here and ready to raze it all to the ground in order to win. The final battle happens in the capital, with heavy losses to be had, but Roman and Iris unite and persevere, getting their peaceful life as a reward for so much sacrifice.
